Prof. Ziqiang Wang, MD, PhD, FRCS, is the Deputy Director of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Center at West China Hospital, Sichuan University, where he also serves as a Chief Surgeon, Professor, and Doctoral Supervisor. A leading expert in colorectal cancer treatment, he specializes in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including laparoscopic radical resections, lateral lymph node dissection, and total proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA). He has introduced innovative surgical approaches such as fascia-microvascular-guided inter-fascial anatomy and reciprocating right hemicolectomy with D3 lymphadenectomy. His contributions to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy combined with selective lateral lymph node dissection have played a key role in advancing rectal cancer treatment in China.
His research focuses on tumorigenesis, metastasis, and the tumor pre-metastatic niche. He has published over 120 scientific papers, with more than 60 appearing in prestigious international journals, including Annals of Surgery, Gastroenterology, Gut, Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, Radiotherapy and Oncology, Diseases of the Colon & Rectum, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and Surgical Endoscopy. He has led several major research projects, including grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and key initiatives under the Ministry of Science and Technology. His work has earned multiple provincial and ministerial Science and Technology Progress Awards, solidifying his influence in colorectal surgery research.
Prof. Wang is actively involved in academic leadership and professional organizations. He is a member of the Colorectal Surgery Group of the Chinese Medical Association and the Colorectal Oncology Professional Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. He also serves as Vice Chairman of the Laparoscopic Special Committee and Chairman of the Colorectal Professional Committee of the Sichuan Anti-Cancer Association. His contributions to national clinical guidelines and expert consensus reports have helped standardize colorectal cancer treatment across China.
With a commitment to advancing surgical precision, research-driven treatment strategies, and patient-centered care, Prof. Wang continues to shape the future of colorectal surgery, both in China and internationally.
